Ad Account Rebates: Cash, Credit and Settlement Are Different

Buyer comparison of cash, advertising account credit and invoice credit rebate settlement types
Practical buyer comparison tool.

Two advertising suppliers both quote a “2% rebate.” One pays cash after reconciliation. One adds advertising credit to an account. One reduces a future invoice. The percentage looks identical, but the buyer receives three different benefits.

Before comparing rates, classify the settlement. Ask what qualifies, when the benefit is earned, who approves it, what form it takes and when it becomes usable. A headline percentage is not a complete commercial term.

Separate three settlement forms

FormWhat the buyer receivesQuestions to resolve
Cash paymentFunds paid to an agreed entity or accountPayee, currency, payment date, transfer charges and tax documentation
Advertising account creditValue usable for future media under stated conditionsEligible account, supported spend, expiry, transferability and refund treatment
Invoice creditA reduction against an eligible future invoiceWhich invoice lines qualify, application date and treatment if the relationship ends

Do not call all three “cashback” in an internal approval. Google explicitly distinguishes its promotional ad credits from cashback or refunds. A supplier-funded rebate is a separate commercial arrangement, but the same distinction is useful: restricted media value should not be recorded as immediately available cash.

Define the earning base

Write the formula in words before using a percentage. The base might be cleared funding, qualified media cost, net media cost after invalid-traffic credits, or another amount defined in the supplier agreement. Taxes, platform credits, refunded spend and service fees may be included or excluded.

Eligible amount = [named report and line items]
Excluded amounts = [taxes / fees / credits / refunds / other]
Qualification period and timezone = [ ]
Rate or tier = [ ]
Approval owner and evidence = [ ]

Use the final platform or supplier report for the agreed period. A deposit can be larger than the media cost consumed, so a top-up receipt alone may not establish the benefit.

A fictional same-rate comparison

Assume, only for illustration, that $50,000 of media cost qualifies and the agreed rate is 2%. The calculated benefit is $1,000 in each offer. These are not YC terms, market benchmarks or customer results.

OfferCalculated amountUsable whenMain restriction to verify
Cash$1,000After approval and paymentSettlement currency and bank charges
Account credit$1,000 media valueAfter credit appears in the eligible accountExpiry and eligible campaigns
Invoice credit$1,000 offsetWhen applied to an eligible invoiceFuture purchase requirement

The nominal amount is the same, but cash timing and restrictions differ. Keep working-capital needs separate from media value. Do not discount a credit using an invented rate; instead, record the restriction and let finance apply its own policy.

Track four dates, not one

  1. Activity date: when eligible media cost occurs.
  2. Reconciliation date: when the period and eligible amount are finalized.
  3. Approval date: when the supplier confirms the benefit.
  4. Settlement date: when cash is paid or a credit becomes usable.

If the rate is tiered, record whether the final tier applies to all eligible spend or only the amount above a threshold. Ask what happens after refunds, platform adjustments or account closure. A promise to “settle monthly” is incomplete without a cut-off, evidence source and expected issue date.
