How to Compare FX Costs in Cross-Border Advertising Quotes

Three-step buyer worksheet comparing reference rate, supplier quote and net usable advertising balance
Practical buyer comparison tool.

A cross-border advertising quote can show “no FX fee” and still use a weaker conversion rate. Another can show a separate fee but deliver more usable media in the billing currency. Compare the net result, not one line in the quote.

Normalize every offer into the same source amount, billing currency and quote time. Record the quoted rate, direction, fee, intermediary charges and final usable advertising balance. The effective rate is the usable billing-currency amount divided by the total source-currency amount paid.

Start with the currency chain

Buyer pays: [currency]
Supplier receives: [currency]
Advertising account is funded in: [currency]
Invoice is issued in: [currency]
Unused funds are returned in: [currency]

If two conversions occur, record both. A USD payment converted to one settlement currency and then to the platform billing currency cannot be compared with a direct conversion using only the first rate.

Google notes that available payment methods depend on country, currency and payment setting. Confirm the actual account billing currency and method before assuming a supplier can fund it in the requested currency.

Choose a dated reference, then keep it separate

A public reference rate is a benchmark for review, not the rate a supplier, bank or payment provider must offer. The European Central Bank publishes euro reference rates for information purposes. Use one source and timestamp consistently when comparing quotes, and label it as a reference rather than a promised transaction rate.

Cross-border payment cost can include transaction fees, account fees, applied FX conversion rates and charges along the payment chain. That is why “zero fee” is not enough information.

Use one fictional comparison

All figures below are fictional and are not current market rates, YC pricing or a customer result. A buyer wants 70,000 units of usable billing currency. Use a fictional reference rate of 7.10 billing units per source unit.

QuoteSupplier rateSeparate feeSource amount needed
A7.000%70,000 ÷ 7.00 = 10,000
B7.081% added(70,000 ÷ 7.08) × 1.01 ≈ 9,985.88

Quote B has an explicit fee but requires about 14.12 fewer source-currency units in this simplified scenario. Add bank, intermediary and receiving charges before reaching a conclusion. Also confirm whether the advertised media balance is gross or net of the supplier fee.

Calculate two comparable outputs

  1. Effective conversion rate: usable billing currency ÷ total source currency paid.
  2. All-in FX difference: total source currency paid minus the source amount implied by the chosen reference rate.

Do not treat the second number as the supplier's profit. It can include market movement, payment-chain costs and the supplier's own margin. The comparison tool shows buyer cost; it does not prove why the difference exists.
